Aikido

Today,I went to my college dojo (a hall used for martial arts training) and practiced Aikido.

Aikido is one of many Japanese martial arts.

It is difficult for me to explain what is different from other Japanese martial arts like Judo and Karate.

So as the quote goes "Seeing is believing", why not watch this movie?

The man in the movie is Gozo Shioda, a Japanese master of aikido.

*Shioda was a small man, standing at around 5’ 1" to 5’ 2" (155–157 cm) and weighing around 102 lb to 108 lb(46–49 kg).

When the movie was taken he was 47 years old! ("photographed" is for still images [i.e. photos], we "take" movies [a series of images, yes, but moving, therefore: taken.)

But he is truly strong.

Many people are fascinated by shioda’s technique.(Of course I am.)

How does he have such strong power even though he is very old and small?

It is because Shioda has special power.

It is often called 気(ki).

Do you know what ki is?

To tell the truth, a lot of aikido players don’t understand the true meaning of ki.(And also, not all people who train aikido can use ki.

You need some talents and a good master.

They don’t have medical knowledge so they can’t explain what is happening in their body when they use ki.(And of course, there are some aikido masters who know but don’t explain the meaning of ki. There are business reasons.)

But I have medical knowledge so I can understand it.

’ll explain it from a medical point of view in my next diary. ("Point of view" is sort of a set phrase in English, so any modifiers to that phrase, like "medical" in this case, go before it.)
